The "Puma" used a 5 cm L/60 gun, same as the Pz.IIIj, This gun however needed a muzzelbreak as the vehicle was not steady enough for the recoil. |
A total of 101 Pumas were produced. |
They were issued to the following units: |
25 to 1./Pz.Aufkl.Lehr Abt. (Pz.Lehr Div.) |
25 to 1./Pz.Aufkl.Abt. 2 (2. Pz.Div.) |
16 to SS-Pz.Aufkl.Abt. 1 (1. SS-Pz.Div. 'LAH') |
16 to Pz.Aufkl.Abt. 20 (20. Pz.Div.) |
6 to 1./Pz.Aufkl.Abt. 7 (7.Pz.Div.) |
The remaining 12 were used with weapon testing (Wa Prüf) |
and training units. One of these 'Puma' was with the Pz.Späh-Zug |
of Pz.Abt. Putlos (K.Gr. Pz.Div. 'Clausewitz') in April 45 |
They saw combat on both fronts. |
Opinion on deployment : One for the "Rats" - Although only 101 were produced, the "Puma" is the most highly recognized German heavy armored car. I would definitely try and get it into War #1, at least for D-day (when most accounts were written about them). |
